![]() "How much do you want it?" This was a common phrase being a part of Studio Nelsen for 3 years, and a question that I ask myself daily to get my butt into the practice room and across the country to various auditions. This term, I've had a great time teaching at Vincennes University, and this phrase echoed in my mind as I watched the progress of my students. I saw a non-music beginner student so enthusiastic about playing her instrument that her persistence could set an example for all the majors around. And with a studio full of freshmen, I watched the students struggle adjust to university life and realize their priorities. With the Fall Gala last week, the students had a clear goal in mind for their playing, and with the desire for successful performances, they took to the practice rooms and really stepped up their playing to a whole new level. I was so proud of my students in the brass choir and the jazz band, as they gave entertaining and strong performances throughout the concert. The week after the concert, I was blown away by how quickly the jazz band put demanding charts together and the brass ensemble put together difficult and taxing new repertoire in one short rehearsal. Seeing such marked and quick progress was incredibly satisfying to me as their teacher, and to them as they realized how clearly their hard work paid off. To my VU ensembles and students: congrats to all of you, it was a pleasure working with you and I hope to see you again in the near future!
