Nearing the end of term, I have found myself reflecting on many of my new students and the progress they have made. Everyone's learning curve is different, and often their stage of playing the horn affects how quickly they pick up new concepts and ideas. But with everyone, the biggest part of learning is habiting new techniques and making them constant. Some of my beginner students are the most successful at this, as they haven't any old habits to break! But some of the most advanced students have the hardest time at forming new habits and routines when they had reasonable success with previous techniques. One prime example is range - many students push and force to get those high notes out, but then have issues with endurance, consistency and musicality, yet are hesitant to admit the. While new habits are often uncomfortable, not always instantly successful or easy to control, giving them a chance and being diligent at monitoring your adherence to them, you will be much more successful in the long run!
